Overview

Drama in Education is an innovative and learner-centered approach that uses dramatic techniques, role-play, improvisation, storytelling, and creative expression to enhance teaching and learning across a wide range of subjects. Rather than focusing solely on performance, this approach engages learners actively in the learning process, encouraging them to explore ideas, solve problems, develop empathy, and deepen their understanding through experiential participation. By creating meaningful and interactive learning experiences, drama fosters critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and self-confidence. As an educational tool, drama supports holistic development and helps learners connect knowledge with real-life situations, making learning more engaging, memorable, and impactful.

This course is designed for and dedicated to educators and other professionals
• who are looking for meaningful ways of reflecting on their professional practice
• who wish to engage with pedagogic issues and widen their understanding of the methods and practice of creative teaching/learning through drama
• who are looking to revitalize and energize their approach to teaching
• who wish to enhance and refresh their skills in delivering subject content in/through English.

As participants come from different European countries, the course is also a valuable exercise in community building and international understanding. The course is 6-day, however there is the possibility to extend it to 7-day.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Understand key drama conventions and techniques and how they create meaning, engagement, and active participation in learning.
• Explore the potential of Drama in Education as a pedagogical approach for enriching teaching and learning across the curriculum.
• Design and implement creative drama-based activities and strategies that support curriculum objectives and learner development.
• Develop the ability to use innovative, student-centered teaching approaches that promote collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and inclusion.
• Enhance confidence and fluency in communicating in English through interactive and experiential learning activities.
• Increase intercultural awareness and understanding through drama, storytelling, and collaborative learning experiences.
• Explore the cultural heritage of Cyprus through visits to sites, museums, and monuments, and develop educational activities and programmes based on these experiences.
• Develop digital competence by using ICT and AI tools to find resources, create lesson plans, develop stories and scenarios, and support innovative teaching practices.
• Reflect critically on the role of drama in fostering learners’ social, emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development.

Methodology

The working methods that are used are highly practical and participatory. The experiential method is used to encourage the search for contemporary pedagogical theories and teaching approaches. The hands-on approach is used to examine real examples, case studies, surveys and simulations. The group activities foster mutual learning, cooperation and collaboration between participants. The discussions encourage sharing ideas, intercultural dialogue and the exchange of good practices between the participants. Social, networking and cultural activities give participants the opportunity to establish professional cooperation and links with teachers, staff, schools and organisations in Europe. At the end of the course, participants fill in an e-questionnaire for evaluation.

Preparation

After confirming registration, participants will be informed about the details of the course (arrival, daily programme). Participants will be able to introduce themselves and bring a few examples of routines and practices that they apply to their teaching.

DAY 3

• ICT tools for finding recourses.
• Drama and Multiple intelligences theory
• Theatre Vs Drama
• Drama activities for concentration
• The role of the teacher in DiE
• Designing costumes for drama activities.
• Group work

DAY 4

• ICT tools for creating stories and scenarios
• DiE as a creative practice
• Drama activities for improving self-expression
• Drama methods & techniques
• Drama method: ‘Mantle of the Expert’
• Designing costumes and accessories
• Group work

DAY 5

• Drama activities for building character
• AI tools for creating lesson plans, stories and scenarios
• Thematic extensions
• Drama activities for Developing Physicality

• Visit to Kourion ancient theater & archaeological site.
• Discussion about activities in archaeological sites.

DAY 7 (optional)

• TOUR TO PAPHOS TOWN (or other cultural sites)
  It includes a tour with 5-stops (9:00 am- 5:00 pm)
  • Tomb of the kings
  • Catacomb of Agia Solomoni
  • Paphos Archaeological Park with Roman mosaics
  • Paphos Medieval Castle and port
  • Petra tou Romiou (birthplace of Aphrodite).
