Overview

The Greek language is one of the world’s oldest recorded languages, with a continuous history spanning over 3,000 years. It has significantly influenced many modern languages, especially through its contributions to science, philosophy, and the arts. The course is designed for adult learners and educators who wish to explore the beauty and richness of the Greek language. who wish to develop a solid foundation in Modern Greek. The course focuses on practical communication skills, essential grammar, and everyday vocabulary, while also offering insights into Greek culture and society in Cyprus. Participants will engage in interactive activities that build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. By the end of the course, learners will be able to communicate effectively in simple situations and demonstrate proficiency at the A1 -A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

This 6-day course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Greek language and cultural heritage, allowing participants to deeply engage with the past and the present of the country. Discussions, site visits and group work will enrich sharing practice between participants. There is also the possibility to extend the course to 7-day.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will:
• acquire elementary proficiency in the Greek language, focusing on learning the Greek alphabet and practicing core language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
• communicate in everyday situations using simple expressions and basic phrases related to personal information, daily routines, and immediate needs
• understand and use common vocabulary and structures related to familiar topics such as family, work, travel, food, and hobbies
• develop listening and speaking skills through interactive dialogues, role-playing, and authentic materials
• read and comprehend short texts such as notices, menus, timetables, and simple personal messages
• write short texts and messages (e.g., emails, postcards, and descriptions) using correct basic grammar and sentence structures
• gain awareness of Greek culture and society, including customs, traditions, and everyday communication norms.
• visit sites, museums and monuments in Cyprus

Methodology

The working methods that are used are highly practical and participatory. The experiential method is used to encourage the search for contemporary pedagogical theories and teaching approaches. The hands-on approach is used to examine real examples, case studies, surveys and simulations. The group activities foster mutual learning, cooperation and collaboration between participants. The discussions encourage sharing ideas, intercultural dialogue and the exchange of good practices between the participants. Social, networking and cultural activities give participants the opportunity to establish professional cooperation and links with teachers, staff, schools and organisations in Europe. At the end of the course, participants fill in an e-questionnaire for evaluation.

Preparation

After confirming registration, participants will be informed about the details of the course (arrival, daily programme). Participants will be able to introduce themselves and bring a few examples of routines and practices that they apply to their teaching.

DAY 1

• Introduction to the Greek language
• Greek alphabet and pronunciation
• Basic greetings, essential vocabulary, basic grammar and syntax

DAY 2

• Greek philosophy and Literature
• Essential vocabulary for everyday communication
• Visit to Limassol Old city center, Carob Mill Museum
• Medieval Castle & Museum and other monuments
• Doing activities in the city center
• Data collection for the group work

DAY 3

• Greek Art and Architecture
• Simple conversations and common phrases Classroom language and expressions
• Definite articles and gender (masculine, feminine, neuter)
• Reading and writing in Greek
• Learning Greek via ICT tools

DAY 4

• Greek cuisine and dining customs
• Practicing vocabulary, basic grammar and syntax
• Conversations, pair dialogues and discussions
• Short writing exercises
• Politeness and forms of address in Greek
• Games and activities

DAY 5

• Greek music and dances
• Practicing listening and reading
• Learning vocabulary, basic grammar and syntax
• Dialogues and discussions
• Learning Greek via AI tools
• Visit at the Limassol Archaeological Museum
• Activities in the museum
• Visit at the Municipal Garden
• Data collection for group work

DAY 6

• Accusative case for nouns and articles
• Common prepositions
• Role-playing real-life scenarios, vocabulary practice
• situational dialogues
• Participants complete the group work, presentation of group work, review of the course, certificates

DAY 7 (optional)

• TOUR TO PAPHOS TOWN (or other cultural sites)
  It includes a tour with 5-stops (9:00 am- 5:00 pm)

  • Catacomb of Agia Solomoni
  • Paphos Archaeological Park with Roman mosaics
  • Paphos Medieval Castle and port
  • Petra tou Romiou (birthplace of Aphrodite).
