BUILDING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT- Classroom management, communication skills, effective teaching and learning (6-day/ 7-day course) Limassol
A positive, productive learning environment in the classroom is fundamental to students' academic, emotional and social success and progress. Teachers who establish classrooms that are supportive, caring, challenging, and academically strong build a positive learning environment. Classroom management techniques; communication skills; effective strategies for teaching and learning; discipline methods; effective routines and climate are basic components of a positive learning environment in the classroom that allows students to feel comfortable and safe; enhance their motivation and progress; and develop the sense of belonging.
This 6-day course gives participants theoretical background about how to build a positive learning environment, as well as practical guidelines to integrate activities and implement programmes across the areas of curriculum and school life. Discussions, site visits and group works will enrich sharing ideas and exchange of practice between participants. There is also the possibility to extend the course to 7-day.
The amount of 730 euro includes course fees, course materials, entrance to museums, tours and accommodation B&B (without accommodation the fees are 480 euro).
During the course, participants will:
- examine techniques for effective Classroom management
- discover ways to develop communication skills with their pupils
- learn productive ways to control stress, tiredness and pressure
- understand and address students’ diversity during teaching
- learn techniques to maximise pupils attention and learning experiences
- examine routines, norms and practices that improve teaching and learning
- learn ways to handle indiscipline and other behavourial problems
- observe and discuss teaching lessons
- visit sites, museums and monuments in Cyprus and plan activities/ programmes
After confirming registration, participants will be informed about the details of the course (arrival, daily programme). Participants will be able to introduce themselves and bring a few examples of routines and practices that they apply to their teaching.
WELCOME • Participants introduce themselves, discuss practices and policies that they use in their teaching practice, course programme overview (day by day).
THEORY • The role of classroom management, observing students/ teachers during teaching, analyzing students’ /teachers’ actions and reactions, factors that influence teaching, students’ diversity, the layout of the classroom, school policy.
VISIT • Visit to a primary school and discussion with the teachers.
THEORY • Teachers’ competence; techniques for effective Classroom management; teaching with confidence; communication skills, verbal and non-verbal communication; routines, norms and practices that improve teaching and learning; choosing suitable teaching methods and means; appropriate use of teaching time.
TOUR TO NICOSIA • Visit to Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia an interactive museum with the history of Nicosia town, ideas from museum’s educational programmes. Visit to Shakolas Tower Museum & Observatory, walk to traditional city center ‘Laiki Gitonia’ • Data collection for the group work.
THEORY • Techniques to maximise pupils’ attention and learning experiences;
controlling stress, tiredness and pressure; handling indiscipline and other behavioural problems; dealing with parents; relationships with staff and administration; observe and discuss teaching lessons.
TOUR • Visits to Limassol Archaeological Museum, Municipal Gallery, Medieval Castle & Museum, Old Carob Mill. Discuss the use of museums, galleries, castles and other sites in teaching and how to control the pupils during outdoors activities. • Data collection.
CLOSURE OF THE COURSE
• Presentation of all group works, review of the project, conclusions, certificates.
